An honest material is one that does not pretend. It carries its own weight, shows its own age and asks to be repaired rather than replaced.
Fewer decisions, better made
Restricting a project to four or five materials removes an enormous amount of noise. Each one can then be detailed properly — how it turns a corner, meets the floor, takes a fixing.
Limitation also protects the budget. Depth in one material is almost always cheaper and better than variety across many.

Designing for age
Stone dulls, oak darkens, concrete stains where water runs. We treat these as intended outcomes and draw the details that direct them, rather than fighting them with coatings.
The spaces that feel timeless are usually the ones that were allowed to change.
